Northside-Southside Annual Community Picnic

This afternoon Northside-Southside celebrated their annual picnic at Titus Towers. We had a great turn out, with over 40 people in attendance. Thanks to everyone who brought a dish-to-pass and volunteered to BBQ and set up for the event!

Sunrise Rotary Luncheon: The SPCS Role Players Are Coming!

When: Sunday, September 9th at 12:30 PM

The Ithaca Sunrise Rotary hosts a monthly community dish-to-pass for elders in the community. The next luncheon is scheduled for Sunday, September 9th at 12:30 PM at Lifelong. This month’s entertainment will be the Role Players of Suicide Prevention & Crisis Service of Tompkins County for some theatrical exploration of critical issues in the lives of seniors. Using improvisation and encouraging audience interaction, the SPCS Role Players bring realistic situations to life while offering audience members the chance to "shape the scene." Traveling to many venues throughout Tompkins County, the goal of each Role Player performance is to empower audience members to practice effective choice-making when facing the challenging issues we all encounter in life.

Suicide Prevention & Crisis Service of Tompkins County provides telephone crisis counseling 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, to community members in distress throughout Tompkins County and the surrounding region through the Crisisline, helps people following suicides, homicides and other traumatic deaths or situations through its After Trauma Services, and offers Education Programs which teach violence prevention, crisis intervention and effective communication skills. Its mission is to promote constructive responses to crisis and trauma and to prevent violence - to self and others - through direct support and community education. YARD SALE

Proceeds benefit Lifelong…

When: Saturday, August 25th 9AM - 1PM
Where: Lifelong, 119 West Court St., Ithaca

A panoply of kitchen crockery and gadgets, books, furniture, lamps, tools, do-dads, games, picture frames, just-what-you-need-for-the-apartment-setup, puzzles, toys, office items, sports accessories, stationary, whatnots, craft bits and pieces, plants, this and that—lots of stuff to buy! AND AT THE SAME TIME on August 25th The GIFT SHOP at Lifelong will be open inside. Many hand-made items by local crafters will be available. AND Lifelong’s Northside/Southside Program will be having a BAKE SALE. Cookies, cakes, breads, pies—yum! Enjoy a cup of coffee while you shop.

We will need donations! Miscellaneous items that are clean and in good working condition will be accepted between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. at Lifelong from August 20th through August 24th or by special arrangement.

Sorry, but we cannot accept clothing, bicycles, cribs, car/child safety seats, computer equipment, large exercise equipment, large appliances (i.e. stoves, refrigerators, etc.), magazines, mattresses, or TVs not cable ready. Call 273-1511 before arriving with large items or items of questionable sale value.

Volunteers are also needed for the setup day and for the sale day, as well as on some days prior to the sale day to help price items. Elections Inspector Training

When: Wednesday, August 22, 2007, 11 AM - 1 PM

Where: Lifelong, 119 West Court Street, Ithaca, NY

This is presentation will be a training by the Tompkins County Board of Elections. In Tompkins County more than 300 people are needed to work as election inspectors and operate the polls on Election Day. In order to take the training, participants must be a registered voter in Tompkins County (18 years or older); represent either the Republican or Democratic Party; and enjoy people and service to others. After successful completion of the training participants will be eligible to be election inspectors for the up General Election and Primary.


Responsibilities of an Election Inspector are:

  • Report to the work site at the designated time
  • Prepare the polling place for voting
  • Set up the voting equipment
  • Process the voters
  • Demonstrate voting procedures to the voters
  • Close the polling place at 9 PM
  • Canvass and report the results

The compensation rate for working as an Elections Inspector is $160 for the General Election Day and $100 for the Primary. Training is also reimbursed if successfully completed.

Senior Circle – Name Change Survey

Senior Circle is a quarterly publication mailed to over 30,000 households in Tompkins County offering information on issues and events for older adults in the community. The Joint Senior Circle Committee (representatives from both Lifelong and Tompkins County Office for the Aging) met to discuss some up coming changes to the Senior Circle. The Committee is considering possible name changes of the publication and would like your input. Survey forms are available at the front desk at Lifelong, if you have any suggestions we’d like to hear from you. You can also give your suggestion directly on this blog by posting your comments.

NYC Trip to visit the Metropolitan Museum of Art

This one-day trip is an opportunity to see the reinstallation of the Hellenistic, Etruscan, and Roman Galleries that shows the extraordinary collection of classical art of the Metropolitan Museum of Art – 5,300 objects in more than 30,000 square feet. This collection spans the period from the 5th century BCE to the 4th century CE in a sky-lit space that links the various galleries and themes. Other exhibits at the museum will be “The Age of Rembrandt,” a celebration of Rembrandt’s 400th birthday, showing 20 works by Rembrandt and over 200 masterpieces by other Dutch artists; and “The Gates of Paradise,” Lorenzo Ghiberti’s Renaissance masterpiece. A presentation at Lifelong on November 7th by Luke Colavito will focus on these exhibits.

All registration must be made in person at Lifelong (119 W. Court Street, Ithaca, New York), Mon-Fri 8:30 AM - 4PM. You must complete a registration form, release form, and select your bus seating, room assignment, and parking choice if applicable. At the time of registration, the deposit is due immediately to secure your reservation. Reservations cannot be taken over the phone.

101 Ways to Retire –or Not!

This documentary is packed with wisdom, and features interviews of nine seniors who live in our area and many scenes of Lifelong. In addition, a series of people-on-the-street interviews spotlights the diverse perceptions of retirement in our culture. Topics include second careers, community activism, volunteering, financial planning, physical activity, and the changing perceptions of aging.

This film is entertaining and informative for people of all ages, whether they are already retired, or are contemplating retirement in the next few years or even decades.
