The future of the Upstairs Gallery, Ithaca

The Upstairs Gallery, a not-for-profit organization located on the 2nd floor of the DeWitt Mall that has been successfully exhibiting and selling artwork for 45 years. (45 years!!)
The board
members have been at the helm since the late 60's and early 70's and are at a crossroads. Based on the response we get, the Upstairs Gallery will either end its long tenure, or will create a new life for itself for the next 45 years. This is a financially sound organization that has successful shows.

What is needed is people.
Specifically:
1) board members. Board members help shape policy. meet monthly
and assist with general operations.
2) a treasurer to keep the books.
3) committee members (publicy & marketing, hanging, membership)
You can either be on the board and a committe or just a committee.
4) general volunteers. They need folks who can "sit" at

the gallery when open.

Robin Schwartz, Program Director of Community Arts Partnership, is gathering names on their behalf. If you are interested in being part of this organization, please let Robin Schwartz know at programs@artspartner.org

BY FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 5th, 5pm.

Tell Robin Schwartz know How you would like to help and If you have any expertise that would be useful, i.e. accounting, publicity...

Once
Robin Schwartz has a group of interested people, she'll be in touch with the results.
Thank you!

The Crossing of Two Lace Trails: The Works and Collections of Maija Lahti DeRoche
and Eniko Farkas

This is the story of two women who immigrated to the U.S. from two different cultures told through one folk art: lace making. The Corning Painted Post Historical Society and The ARTS Council of the Southern Finger Lakes present The Crossing of Two Lace Trails: The Works and Collections of Maija Lahti DeRoche and Eniko Farkas. The reception will take place Friday, August 8, 5:30 to 7:30 PM in the Spotlight Gallery @ The ARTS, 32 West Market Street in Corning. It includes an artist forum with a discussion of European lace making and a lace making demonstration.

This exhibit looks at two traditions of lace making: Hungarian needle lace by Eniko Farkas and Finnish bobbin lace by Maija Lahti DeRoche. Lace is usually associated with women's domestic work. Historically, however, it developed from the sailor's craft of net making. Sailors taught their wives who began creating laces at home. The sailors were then able to trade that lace on their journeys. Lace has played an important role in European economies beginning in the fifteenth century and continuing until the rise of machine made lace in the early nineteenth century. After the medieval Crusades, lace making became associated with virtuous women, especially peasant women, and was used as a means to keep them in the home. Lace is, therefore, most often considered a woman's folk art despite the involvement of men from its inception to the present. Maija's father was instrumental in the preservation of the bobbin lace tradition in Finland.
This exhibit is co-sponsored by The ARTS Council of the Southern Finger Lakes and the Corning-Painted Post Historical Society. It is a program associated with the crochet lace exhibit at the Benjamin Patterson Inn entitled, Lace, the Spaces Between: Domestic Lace Making and the Social Fabric of the Italian American Community in Corning.
