Martial arts is an option for all ages. The philosophy and techniques of the martial arts that relate to the importance and benefits of movement for young and old alike will be enumerated. Learn strategies to deal with challenging behaviors and how to care for you, the caregiver.
Introduction to the Floating Classroom Project & the Role of Seniors in the Future of Cayuga Lake (1229): Wednesday, 4/22, 3PM-4:30PM & 5/13, 3PM- 5PM, Bill Foster (2 Sessions) --Learn about Cayuga Lake and become a steward. At the first meeting, Floating Classroom instructors will share photos and insights of Cayuga Lake eco-cruises. An open discussion will give updates on the condition of our Lake, and to share thoughts. Participants will use lake monitoring equipment. The second meeting will take place aboard the M/V Haendel (leaving from the Ithaca Farmers’ Market Dock). Everyone will have a chance to participate, swap stories with our crew, and enjoy the best view from around the lake. We hope this introductory program will become just the first step in an ongoing Lifelong Steward program for Cayuga Lake. Fee $10. (for boat ride; pay at registration.)
Depression in Later Life:Workshop for Older Adults & Caregivers (1230) Thursdays, 4/23-5/7, 10AM-12PM, Catherine Wedge, Lisa Kendall, Liz Norton (3 sessions): We will be exploring common myths about depression in older adults, learning about its causes, how it is diagnosed, and exploring various treatment approaches. There will be ample opportunity for questions and discussion. Course Objectives: causes of depression and depressive symptoms; three major approaches to treating geriatric depression; connection between physical illness, pain, and depression; to identify barriers to getting proper diagnosis and treatment; consider strategies for engaging older adults in treatment

Join us for one of the navigation sessions this semester. This workshop is for anyone interested in learning more about Medicare – Medicare beneficiaries, their families, caregivers and community members. Participants will find out how to obtain a list of preventive procedures for which they are currently eligible. Please bring your Medicare Number, Medicare Part D Prescription Drug Plan Number, Medicare Advantage or Medigap Policy Number as they can help you navigate through some of the sites; you can still benefit from the session if you don’t have your numbers.

This two-hour interactive presentation will include identifying types of Medicare coverage and programs that are available to help pay for health care costs; making sure that if you do have other types of health insurance coverage—including prescription drug coverage—that you know how they interact with Medicare; recognizing and taking advantage of the many preventive services available to you as a Medicare beneficiary; and familiarizing yourself with Medicare resources. In this demonstration class, Dilmeran will be sharing some of the time and frustration saving sewing short-cut techniques she has learned in NYC design houses and during her lectureships in apparel design at Cornell University.

An ecological footprint is the amount of the Earth’s productive capacity a person draws on to meet his or her consumption patterns. If the world’s productive area were divided evenly among its 6+ billion people, the result would consist of 5 acres per person. Currently, the footprint of the average person in the world is about 7 acres, meaning that we are already over budget as a human family. Let’s get started by calculating your personal Ecological Footprint in order to understand its consequences. Learn ways that will help us walk more softly upon our earth.
You’ll Never Get Lost: Enjoy Relaxed Driving with a Portable GPS (1312)Wednesday, 4/29, 10AM-11:30AM, Michael Miller -- With a GPS you’ll be able to quickly locate the nearest gas station, rest stop, grocery store, restaurant, hospital, police station, etc. Using a GPS is quite easy to do. We’ll look at a fairly inexpensive portable GPS unit, see its features and see how quickly you can lean to use it. Time permitting; we’ll also examine a small hand-held hiking GPS for those interested in walking out in the countryside, on trails, etc. and finding your way back to your base or your car! If you have a portable GPS and have questions, bring it to class with your user’s manual. Presenter: Mike Miller, who has been using GPS units for the past four years in NY State as well as in Toronto and Ottawa, ONT, Portland, OR, Boothbay, ME, Tampa, Sarasota, FL--and hasn't gotten lost!
Heart Disease Prevention Workshop (1313): Thursday, 4/30, 10AM-12PM, Brian Bartholomew --Learn the role inflammation plays in Heart Disease and how to reduce inflammation. Also learn some natural strategies that can help to slow or prevent Heart Disease. This class will examine common questions like what are the different types of cholesterol, what are normal levels, and what are the common treatments and their side effects. Along with the questions of cholesterol the questions of what is high blood pressure and how to naturally lower it will be addressed.

PARKINSON'S EXERCISE CLASS:
An eight-week series of exercise classes for persons with Parkinson's Disease or other movement disorders will begin Tuesday, April 21, 10:30-11:15 AM in the Kendal at Ithaca auditorium.
The class will be led by Debbie Bosanko, an AFAA certified instructor, and will
cost $30 for the 8 sessions

Supportive caregivers are welcome to participate at no cost.
